From Shame to Alignment: Finding My Way Back to Reiki

A Reiki book on a windowsill, surrounded by vibrant summer flowers that add a touch of nature's tranquility.
For a long time, I carried a quiet shame.

Over a decade ago, I followed a path that, at the time, felt right. I was introduced to Reiki—this beautiful, subtle healing energy—and completed my Level 1 attunement. But something didn’t sit right. The training didn’t resonate with me on a deeper level. The teacher’s energy, the method, the feeling—it all left me confused, unsure, and eventually disconnected from Reiki altogether.

I abandoned the practice. Not just because of doubt, but because I felt ashamed. Ashamed that I might have chosen the wrong path. That I had misunderstood something sacred. That I wasn’t “spiritual enough” or “in tune enough.” I buried that part of my journey, quietly distancing myself from something I once felt curious about.

For nearly ten years, Reiki remained a closed door.

But the truth is: sometimes we have to take a wrong turn to discover the right one. Sometimes we’re guided to teachers or paths that don’t align—not because we failed, but because we’re being redirected.

Recently, something shifted.

As a yoga teacher and Ayurveda practitioner, I’ve deepened my commitment to a lifestyle of integrity, balance, and authenticity. In that space of trust and openness, Reiki found me again—this time, through an Indian Reiki school rooted in the very philosophy and traditions I live by. It felt like coming home.

Reflecting on my own journey, I began to understand why so many people — myself included — drift away after their Level 1 or even Level 2 attunement. It’s not because Reiki “didn’t work.” It’s often because we weren't supported to integrate it into real life.

I’ve found it usually comes down to:

  • Feeling uncertain or not “good enough” to practice

  • Lack of community or ongoing connection

  • Emotional overwhelm after the attunement

  • Life getting busy, and Reiki becoming a forgotten “someday” thing

Reiki isn’t just a technique — it’s a practice of remembering, returning, and restoring connection to ourselves. Now I’m passionate about helping others gently reconnect with Reiki, not as a duty, but as a quiet support that’s always there.

Finding Reiki Again — This Time, as Self-Care

I’ve come back to Reiki again and again over the years. But this time, it’s different.

I used to see Reiki as another therapy I offered to others — another tool in my practitioner’s kit. But what I’ve come to realize is that Reiki was never meant to be something separate - it’s not just something I do for others… it’s something I live with, for myself.

Now, I’m rediscovering Reiki as a quiet, sacred self-care practice and a way to return to myself, a way to soften, a way to reconnect sometimes a way to heal.....

It’s not about being perfect, or always “in the flow.” It’s about remembering that this nurturing energy is already within me — I just have to pause and receive it.

From now on i see Reiki not as a duty or performance, but as a gentle companion in my everyday live.

This may explain why some people abandon Reiki after the first treatment or attunement:

 1. Lack of Ongoing Support or Mentoring

  • After the attunement, many people are left without follow-up guidance.

  • Reiki can stir up deep emotional or energetic shifts; without a teacher or peer group to talk to, this can feel confusing or even overwhelming.

  • There’s often no structured path after Level 1, leaving students unsure how to integrate Reiki into daily life.

2.Energetic Detox and Emotional Reactions

  • Post-attunement, people may experience a "21-day cleansing period", which can bring up emotional turbulence, physical discomfort, or unresolved trauma.

  • Without preparation or proper explanation, these symptoms are misinterpreted as something “wrong” with Reiki or the self.

3.Expectations vs. Reality

  • Some people expect dramatic or mystical experiences immediately (e.g., seeing auras, instant healing).

  • When this doesn't happen, they assume "Reiki isn't working" or that they’re "not gifted enough," which leads to disillusionment.

    4.Not Enough Embodiment or Self-Practice

    • Reiki Level 1 is about self-healing, but some students skip or undervalue this aspect.

    • Without regular self-practice, the energy doesn’t fully integrate, and people don’t get to experience its benefits deeply.

    • Reiki is subtle; its power builds with consistent, mindful use.

    5. Poor Teaching or Misalignment with Teacher

    • If the Reiki teacher wasn’t grounded, compassionate, or thorough, the experience can feel superficial or transactional.

    • Some Reiki classes are rushed or overly commercial, with little emphasis on traditional spiritual or meditative roots.

    6. Spiritual Bypassing or New Age Confusion

    • Some people are drawn to Reiki as a "quick fix" or trend, without understanding that it is a spiritual practice requiring patience, discipline, and inner work.

    • When results aren’t immediate or when deeper healing emerges, they back away because it requires more than they expected.

    7. Unintegrated Trauma

    • Reiki can bring awareness to suppressed emotions or trauma.

    • If someone has unresolved trauma and no support system (therapist, healer, grounded teacher), the practice might feel destabilizing or scary.

    8. Lack of Confidence

    • Many students feel unsure about “doing it right,” especially if they don’t feel energy strongly.

    • Doubts creep in, and without validation or guidance, they abandon the practice.

This experience reminded me:

It’s okay to walk away from what doesn’t feel right.

It’s okay to pause a journey and return to it later.

It’s okay to start again.

If you're feeling ashamed for choosing the “wrong” path, teacher, or method, please hear this: you didn’t fail. You were simply learning. Growth often comes wrapped in discomfort. What matters is how we meet ourselves in that discomfort—with honesty, compassion, and a willingness to keep listening to our inner voice.

"The heart of Reiki is not in doing, but in being."

Just for today:

I will not worry.

I will not be angry.

I will be grateful.

I will do my work honestly.

I will be kind to every living thing
