“Sin — The Heart-Mind Path to Wholeness”

Updated: Nov 5

Sunday Satsang #3: Heart, Mind, and the Essence of Xīn (Sin) ❤️

The Heart — The Centre of Our Being

The heart is the core of our existence. It is from this sacred space that our truth radiates. In ancient times, the heart and mind were not seen as separate entities. Old languages and sacred texts often used one word to encompass both — heart and mind as a unified essence.

In Chinese tradition, this word is Xīn (心) — pronounced “Sin”. It signifies that the heart and mind are one. The symbol itself resembles a heart. The ancients never separated thinking from feeling, nor wisdom from compassion. For them, Sin was the seat of both truth and life.

This perspective is profound. Once we embrace it, we begin to understand ancient writings with newfound clarity: the heart and mind are inseparable. The ancients did not divide the body from the mind, nor thought from action, nor logic from intuition.

How Did They Follow Xīn (Sin)?

  • They listened inwardly, not just outwardly. The guidance of Sin came not through endless reasoning but through a quiet attunement to what felt true and alive in the heart.

  • They practiced ritual and simplicity. Every act — eating, walking, speaking — was a way of aligning body, heart, and mind.

  • They trusted intuition as wisdom, viewing it not as opposed to logic but as its natural companion.

  • They lived in rhythm with nature. Sunrise and sunset, seasons and cycles — the heart’s wisdom flowed in harmony with the greater order of the Dao.

This way of living did not require striving; it required slowing down and listening. To act from Sin was to act from one’s true centre, where love, wisdom, and clarity are not divided. When we live from the heart, decisions become simpler, compassion flows more freely, and life feels less like a battle of opposites.

The Daoist masters called this way of being the everyday Dao — living not from separation, but from wholeness. The "greater order of the Dao" in Daoist philosophy refers to the natural, inherent order of the universe. It is often described as a flowing, dynamic process of change and interconnectedness. It is not a static, pre-ordained structure, but rather a self-regulating system where everything exists in a state of constant flux and balance.

For us, who so often forget this unity, many of our daily struggles could dissolve if we remembered just one word: the heart.

Embracing the Heart-Mind Connection

The heart-mind connection is a gentle reminder of our innate wisdom. It encourages us to pause and reflect. In our busy lives, we often overlook this vital relationship. Yet, nurturing this bond can lead us to deeper insights and a more fulfilling existence.

Finding Stillness in a Chaotic World

In a world filled with distractions, finding stillness can feel like a challenge. However, it is in these quiet moments that we can truly connect with our heart and mind. Take a moment to breathe deeply. Allow yourself to feel the rhythm of your heart. This simple act can ground you, bringing clarity and peace.

The Power of Reflection

Reflection for Today’s Satsang:

  • What does your Sin — your heart-mind — tell you right now about the path you are on?

  • Where in your life could you listen less to noise and more to this deep inner centre?

I hope that Sunday letters with your morning coffee will become a cherished ritual for you. If you know me, you understand that a good cup of coffee is one of my simple joys.

So, if today’s Satsang brought you a moment of inspiration or peace — and you feel called to give a little something back — you’re welcome to treat me to a virtual cup of coffee. It’s a sweet way to support the quiet moments of creation that go into each Sunday reflection.

Thank you for walking alongside me on this gentle journey of words, stillness, and soul. I’m grateful we get to share it. 🌿 Inga
